UNESCO Global Geoparks

UNESCO Global Geoparks are unified geographical areas recognized worldwide for their sites and landscapes of international geological significance. These areas are managed holistically, promoting protection, education, and sustainable development. Local geological heritage is highlighted and its influence on nature and cultural heritage explored.

Through their actions, geoparks work with local communities and businesses to promote their sustainable development. Educational programmes are run to highlight the rich outdoor learning opportunities available. These can be accessed at specific geosites or geotrails throughout the Geoparks’ territories or directly with the school; either in person in the classroom or outdoors or through digital resources. Some of these resources are targeted directly for teachers.

We live at the surface of our planet over what we call the bedrock. This bedrock has fashioned our landscapes. From it is derived our soils in which we grow our food. It’s also from the bedrock that we extract a number of resources including construction material and metals used in modern technology. It also influences our water quality.
